‘Kassicieh House’
We only have a few photos of my great grandmother's family home in Palestine. The two images collaged in this artwork are two of the only existing photos of the home, and they are so symbolic of a sense of home and longing. My aunt May worked with me on this artwork as she circled herself in the photo standing outside the home, and wrote, in her handwriting, 'Kassicieh house, tata's house'. Tata is the colloquial term for grandmother, and my aunt shared that visiting her Tata's home in Palestine was one of her warmest and most enduring memories of her childhood and her Palestinian identity. Most Palestinians will never see their homes again, so the photographs, artworks, illustrations, and memories we attach to these physical places carry a lot of value and significance. This artwork celebrates those memories and that eternal connection to that land.
